Consequently they are strongly influenced by the chemical composition of the sea water, and they are rich in <strong>sodium<\/strong> and <strong>chlorine<\/strong>. Of the salts dissolved in seawater about 80 per cent is <strong>sodium<\/strong> chloride. (Braun-Blanquet 1932:191)<\/p>\n<p><em>Determination of Chloride Content<\/em>.\u2014According to Lagatu and Sicard (1911), the fluctuations of the <strong>chlorine<\/strong> content of the soil calculated on the basis of 100 parts of air-dried or moist soil give consistent results. Calculated on the basis of dry or moist earth, the <strong>sodium<\/strong> chloride content of the lagoon soils near Montpellier increases constantly down to a depth of 2.5 m., as is shown in the accompanying figure (107).
